CATALOGUE OF A COLLECTION OF EARLY FRENCH BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY OF C. FAIRFAX MURRAY COMPILED BY HUGH WM. DAVIES
THIS CATALOGUE OF EARLY FRENCH BOOKS, WHICH I HOPED TO HAVE HAD THE HONOUR OF DEDICATING TO THAT UNIQUE POET AND SCHOLAR ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE, IS NOW INSCRIBED TO HIS MEMORY.
PREFACE. The following Catalogue comprises the early French books in the library of Mr. C. Fairfax Murray ; the period embraced being 1475 to 1692, two items respectively dated 1705 & 1728 being admitted as containing woodcuts belonging to a much earlier period. The project of describing the collection had been contemplated some years ago, when the late Robert Proctor of the British Museum in the course of examining the books remarked to a colleague, “We must have a list of these!"
One of the few Latin books in this category was probably printed (secretly) at Emden, but it has a direct bearing on French history, and is possibly by a French author.
